What purpose does a youth group serve? Here at Covenant Baptist church the group, now called Conviction, serves as a means to the following end:

youth boys

“That every student would be “adequate, equipped for every good work”, for their God-ordained calling and purpose. That they continue in the ideas and principles they “have learned and become convinced of” through sound Biblical teaching and personal spiritual development. That when they move on from the youth group, they know what they believe, why they believe it and how it affects their lives.”

The theme of the youth group grows out of II Timothy 3:14-17 where Paul writes:

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured (convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

This passage contains 5 foundational principles that form the overall goal of the youth group. They are:

                1. Everything must be rooted in Scripture

                2. Nothing is more valuable or beneficial than Scripture

                3. We are responsible for our own worldview

               4. We are required to persevere in truth

               5. There is a God-ordained purpose to our lives that we must equip ourselves to accomplish

And from those principles, we established our goal.

Every week the youth meet on Wednesday night for their Bible Study session. Beginning at 6:30, following choir practice, this 30-45 minute time slot is an opportunity for the students to build up their faith through Bible Study, logic building, and active discussion. It is in these sessions that the students have an opportunity to hone and sharpen their Biblical philosophy as well as grasp the real-world implications of Christianity.

wednesday group      This weekly session is the essence of Conviction. It is here that they have the opportunity to sharpen each other “as iron sharpeneth iron”. Here is where the overall goal of being “adequate, equipped for every good work” is practiced and achieved.

If you want to get a taste of what Conviction, the youth group of Covenant is like, then come one Wednesday night and join in the fun.

Meeting together to study God’s Word and apply it to life is the primary goal of Conviction. Another reason is the positive influence and atmosphere. Some events the youth participate in will be geared towards the goal of having good, clean fun with other, like-minded youth. An outing to sporting event, a friendly laser-tag competition, and seasonal outings such as hay-rides, and Christmas caroling are examples of the social activities in which the youth participate.

youth group christmasSNAC:

Once a month a family in the church hosts a Sunday Night After Church (SNAC) event for the youth. Beginning immediately after the evening service and lasting until 9:00, this is a great time of fun and fellowship as the students gather under one roof to share a meal and a good time.
